Ultrasound

What is Ultrasound?

Therapeutic ultrasound has been around for many decades and has become a very effective treatment for a variety of conditions. It uses non-invasive, mechanic sound energy to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.

How does it work?

It works by producing low level ultrasound waves to create vibrations and raise the internal temperature of  a targeted area of the body. These vibrations combined with heat create friction of tissues on a molecular level. This helps to reduce inflammation and break up scar tissue which is one of the greatest benefits of ultrasound therapy. It can penetrate deep into muscles and joints that a heat pack alone just can’t do.

How will this kind of therapy benefit me?

1. Promote tissue healing. Not only will ultrasound help to increase joint range of motion, it can help aid in the healing of injured and wounded tissues. By producing heat, it increases the flow of blood into the injured tissue bringing with it oxygen and nutrients needed for healing.

2. Reduce swelling and inflammation. Ultrasound therapy has been shown to reduce stiffness in muscles and joints while increasing range of motion. Once blood flow is increased and swelling and inflammation is reduced, this will allow your muscles and joints to respond more favorably to chiropractic care.

3. Increase blood flow. Just as cold decreases blood flow, heat increases it. As I mentioned earlier, this therapy will cause your blood vessels to increase in size and therefore increase the blood flow. Increased blood flow means more nutrients will be delivered to the area of your injury while waste is carried away. This ultimately enhances the healing process.
